Always Do This After An Interview

Easily stand out from the crowd by doing this….

 

We all try our hardest to stand out during the interview process. In this competitive job market, people are preparing for interviews the same way they would studying for the GMAT! While doing an excellent job in an interview is getting you a step closer to landing your dream job, there is one more step that can put you a step above the competition. The Thank You letter.

 

While most people should know to send a follow-up thank you letter, they are not taking full advantage of the communication when sending a generic & overused format. This standard thank you letter usually follows the following format:

 

“Dear John,

 

Thank you for taking the time to interview me today. It was great hearing about your unique work culture, and I could see myself doing well in this type of environment. Please let me know if there is anything you need from me to help make your decision easier.

 

Sincerely,

 

Jenny Smith”

 

While this is a fine letter, it is making one critical mistake. The mistake is in the last line of the email where they state “Let me know if there is anything you need from me to make your decision easier.” Instead of asking if they need something from you, give them a reason to make their decision easier.

 

A few good examples of what to say instead of this last line are:

  • “We discussed a few new project launch ideas during the interview. I have attached an example of previous project launches that I think could apply directly to this position. I would be happy to discuss these strategic plans with you further.”
  • “I just got my Q3 sales results, and I was able to hit my target sales quotas and even exceeded a few. I would be happy to share with you how I have achieved this success and believe a similar strategy could work in this new role.”
  • “In the meantime, here are three testimonials from past client’s that are in similar industries that have had a positive outcome due to my work.”

 

As a final note, the thank you letter should still focus on thanking the person you interviewed with for their time. But it is also a great way for you to create a memorable and lasting impression that could mean the difference between getting that promotion and landing your dream job, or being completely passed over and forgotten.
